Installing a new roof will improve your home's resell value as well as add curb appeal giving a prospective homebuyer a good first impression, that is, if your home is for sale. For homeowners planning on staying put indefinitely, a new roof is a long-term investment and choosing the right type of shingle including the style and color is a choice the homeowner will have to live with for years.
Shingle manufacturer CertainTeed has created a short video sure to help the person that is thinking of replacing their roof by showing style and color options with tips on choosing a replacement roof. Whether the reason is for improving resell value and curb appeal or if the current roof is in need of replacement this video is a good place to start.

We end the series "Does My Roof Need to be Replaced" with 3 more roofing problems that may indicate it is time to call a roofing professional (See the descriptive images below). If you missed either of the first two parts of the series click on the link(s): Part 1. Part 2.
Blistered shingles are a highly debated topic between manufacturers including CertainTeed and Tamko as well as home inspectors and roofing contractors.
Blistered shingles can be caused by several reasons. Some manufacturers claim it is just cosmetic and will not affect a shingles performance and is part of the normal aging process. In some cases though, blistering shingles are due to an improperly ventilated roof causing the shingles to get too hot.
If you notice a substantial amount of blistered shingles we recommend having a qualified roofing contractor like Drawdy Roofing & Vinyl Siding inspect your roof to determine the reason for the blistering.
Buckling Roof Deck
The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association lists several reasons for roof buckling, one being improper roof ventilation. (To learn more about how insulation and ventilation work together to keep your home comfortable as well as roofing ventilation recommendations click here).
Another reason a roof can buckle is due to improper installation of the underlayment, which can happen when an inexperienced roofing contractor installs a roof. Always work with an experienced roofing contractor that is licensed and insured and that can provide referrals.
Damage caused by wind and hail cost State Farm and its policyholders more than $3.9 billion in 2012, according to an April 2013 analysis by the insurer. The property damage can be as minimal as a few broken shingles to total destruction of buildings. More on hail statistics here.
The Internet has a wealth of information on how to identify a hail-damaged roof, but little information is available on how hail actually damages an asphalt shingle and what can happen if the hail damaged roof is not replaced.
As explained by an Illinois roofing contractor Countryside Roofing and image provider: "Hail damage is a problem for roofs by breaking the fiberglass embedded in the asphalt mats of a shingle. This will eventually lead to cracks in shingles over time due to the fractured fiberglass being stressed from expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes resulting in water damage to the roof and interior of the home."
Steps are provided here if you have had hail and storm damage to your roof.

Although we answer the question in the section of our website, “Signs of Roof Damage” as well as previous blog articles, we know that our job to help homeowners keep their property sound and secure is ongoing as well as it being part of our mission. We also believe in the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” when addressing a homeowner’s question; “when is it time to replace my roof?”
In the first of this three part series are descriptive pictures shown below of common reasons for replacing your roof, including; Missing roof shingles, granule loss of roofing shingles, and curling roofing shingles. Images courtesy of Countryside Roofing in Illinois.
If you notice any or all of these first three problem areas with your roof then it would be a good idea to have a professional roofing contractor take a look for further evaluation.
In the next two-blog posts we will point out 6 other reasons it may be time to replace your roof and what to look for when a replacement roof might be necessary.

In the first of 3 parts, “Does My Roof Need to be Replaced” we pointed out missing roofing shingles, granule loss on roofing shingles and curling roofing shingles as reasons it may be time to have a qualified roofing contractor inspect your roof. Many roofing companies provide free estimates as we do at Drawdy Roofing & Vinyl Siding. A side note: Make sure you are provided with a copy of the roofing contractors' general liability and workers compensation insurance with the estimate. More on what to look for in a reputable contractor can be found here.
Now to the list:
Damaged Roof Flashing
Flashing problems are a major cause of roof leaks as a result of wind, improper installation or work by other contractors. The problem can become worse if not addressed as soon as possible. Remember roof leaks can cause structural damage including rotting support beams, and interior walls and ceilings not to mention mold.
Water Damage and Rotting Wood
Many roofs replaced by Drawdy Roofing & Vinyl Siding have rotten wood in various areas unknown to the homeowner. The areas we most likely find with water damage and rotting wood are around chimney flashing, vents, HVAC stacks and along eaves where roofing materials meet a wall. If you notice any rotting wood as in the inside of the pictured attic above it is time to call a qualified roofing contractor.
Water Marks from Roof Leaks
Ceiling stains as pictured below are an indication of a possible roof leak and should be addressed immediately. Just one leaking area of the roof may cause a domino effect or other problems leading to the additional expense of replacing structural wood in the roofing system and interior walls and ceilings. There could also be the chance of mold causing allergic reaction in some people. Read more on mold problems here from the EPA.
Stay tuned for the final article on when it may be time to replace your roof.
